The final day of the PPA Tour finals was completed on Sunday and the five championship matches delivered for a packed house in San Clemente. Let’s break down what went down starting with women’s doubles.
Women’s Doubles Championship: Waters/Parenteau take it in four
Game one of the women’s doubles final went in favor of Anna Bright and Rachel Rohrabacher. Dating back to their victory at Worlds in Dallas that was four games in a row they had taken off Anna Leigh Waters and Catherine Parenteau. However Waters and Parenteau were able to recover and win the next three games to take the title, sealing game four 12-10. Bright and Rohrabacher tried to isolate and attack Parenteau but she was up to the task. This rivalry isn’t going anywhere and should be a fun storyline to follow in 2025.
Men’s Singles Championship: Johnson caps off season with major win
Hunter Johnson was able to claim his 3rd gold medal in his last four months on the PPA Tour with a win over Connor Garnett. Garnett did his best to force a 3rd and deciding game but Johnson slammed the door shut with some phenomenal passing shots down the stretch. That is back to back golds for Johnson as well who looks to be a serious contender to Federico Staksrud’s singles crown in 2025.
Mixed Doubles Championship: Johns and Waters finish season in style
Christian Alshon and Catherine Parenteau did their best to try and disrupt the flow of Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters Sunday but the #1 seeds were locked in from the start as they took the matches in four games, dominating games one and two. It caps off an amazing year for the best mixed team in the world who only lost once all year on the PPA Tour, way back in March to Andrei Daescu and Anna Bright.
Men’s Doubles Championship: One way traffic
There may be a new #1 men’s doubles team in the world. Federico Staksrud and Hayden Patriquin have played three tournaments together and have won all three. This time they defeated JW Johnson and Gabe Tardio in three games and it wasn’t all that close as they isolated JW Johnson in kitchen action and kept Gabe Tardio from getting involved. We’ll see if this is a full time team heading into 2025, if it is the field is in trouble.
Women’s Singles Championship: Waters completes her triple crown
Anna Leigh Waters jumped out to an early lead over Parris Todd but Todd scrapped her way back into it to get the score to 10-9. Waters was able to close it out then rolled in game two 11-4. To triple crown at an event with this much competition speaks to the level the 17 year old is playing at right now. We’ll see if Anna Bright and some of the other females on tour can close the gap in 2025.
