Day two of pool play got underway Thursday at the Lifetime Fitness in San Clemente. Let’s take a look at what when on across all five disciplines.
Men’s Singles: Duong withdraws, Johns upset
Quang Duong had to withdraw from the singles field due to a right knee injury so Pablo Tellez stepped in for him. Tellez lost to McGuffin, which sealed Tyson’s spot on semifinal Saturday. Meanwhile, Ben Johns was eliminated as he went down to Connor Garnett in two games. In the other pool, it took Federico Staksrud three games to defeat Hunter Johnson and Dylan Frazier kept his hopes of a semifinal alive with a win over Jaume Martinez Vich.
Women’s Singles: Brascia continues to roll
Mary Brascia backed up her win over Jorja Johnson with a win over Catherine Parenteau which books her ticket to semifinal Saturday. Parenteau and Johnson were both eliminated as they stand 0-2 in pool play. Parris Todd lost to Anna Leigh Waters and Kate Fahey beat Lacy Schneemann so Friday will determine whether Fahey or Todd advance along with Anna Leigh Waters.
Mixed Doubles: Top seeds do it again
The semifinal matchups for mixed doubles are set for Saturday even with one match to play for every team as the top four seeds swept again to go 2-0 in pool play. Friday’s results will determine seeding which is important. Christian Alshon and Catherine Parenteau were very impressive defeating James Ignatowich and Meghan Dizon 11-1, 11-2.
Men’s Doubles: Parody late into the evening
Some strong showings on Thursday from the underdogs makes for a very interesting last day of pool play. Dekel Bar and Christian Alshon erased an 11-1, 5-1 deficit to defeat the Johns brothers in three games. Tyson McGuffin and Andrei Daescu defeated the red hot Federico Staksrud and Hayden Patriquin. Both those teams advanced. The two other semifinalists will be determined by two matchups on Friday. The Johns brothers versus Tardio and Johnson, who both sit 1-1. Frazier and Tellez versus Staksrud and Patriquin as both those teams sit at 1-1 as well.
Women’s Doubles: Johnson and Schneemann pull the upset
Anna Leigh Waters/Catherine Parenteau were up a game and had a lead in game two of their second match but Jorja Johnson and Lacy Schneemann were able to make the comeback to win in three games. Waters and Parenteau will have to defeat Tina Pisnik and Parris Todd to lock in their spot in the semifinals. In other pool Anna Bright and Rachel Rohrabacher looked strong once again defeating Mari Humberg and Jessie Irvine in two games. They’ll face Tyra Black and Allyce Jones tomorrow.
