What to wear for pickleball: Clothing tips for comfort, performance, and style

Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, and part of its appeal is that it’s easy to begin with typical activewear. But once you start playing regularly, you’ll learn that the right clothing can make a big difference in how you feel and perform on the court.

Whether you're gearing up for a casual rec game or playing in a competitive tournament, here are the top clothing tips to help you stay comfortable, confident, and ready to win.

Dress in layers for all-weather play

Pickleball is played year-round, often on outdoor courts, which can get chilly in the morning and hot by midday. That’s why layering is key.

Layers give you flexibility to adapt as the game (and weather) heats up.

Choose clothes that move with you

Pickleball demands quick lateral movements, sudden sprints, and deep lunging — so your outfit should move as freely as you do.

  • Stretchy, breathable fabrics are a must. Think performance materials that offer both flexibility and ventilation.

  • Avoid anything too tight or restrictive — look for clothing designed for pickleball, tennis, or other racket sports, which often have similar movement requirements.

  • For women, a high-impact sports bra is essential. Pickleball may look low-key, but quick stops, jumps, and directional changes can make support a top priority.

Prioritize pockets that zip or stay secure

One of the underrated challenges in pickleball? Figuring out what to do with your stuff.

  • Pick shorts, skirts, or jackets with zip-up or deep, secure pockets to stash an extra ball, a key, or your phone without losing it mid-point.

  • Zip pockets are especially handy during tournaments when you’re on and off the court and need easy access to essentials, but don't want to risk snagging your paddle in an open pocket.

Protect yourself from the sun

Most pickleball courts are outdoors, and that means regular sun exposure.

  • Wear a hat or visor to shield your face and improve visibility.

  • UPF-rated clothing can provide added protection from UV rays without sacrificing breathability.

  • Don’t forget lightweight long sleeves for sunny days when you want to skip the sunscreen but stay covered.

A little sun protection goes a long way when you’re playing several matches in a row.

Go for grip on your feet

Technically not clothing, but your shoes are one of the most important parts of your pickleball outfit.

  • Choose court shoes designed for lateral movement, not running shoes, which can increase your risk of injury.

  • Look for pickleball-specific treads that won’t slip on gym floors or outdoor courts.

  • Breathability is a plus, especially during long summer matches.

Socks matter too: go for moisture-wicking athletic socks to prevent blisters and keep your feet cool.

Consider color and style (but keep function first)

Pickleball fashion is getting more fun by the day, with bold colors, patterns, and unique gear designed just for the sport.

  • Feel free to express your personal style, but make sure your outfit works for the court. Function should always come first.

  • Coordinating with your partner or team? It’s a great way to show off your team spirit (and look sharp in photos). Just make sure you wear a legal color when participating in tournaments.
