Introducing the Selkirk LABS Project 007 pickleball paddle and updates to the LABS Program

Selkirk Sport has launched the Selkirk LABS Project 007 pickleball paddle, which offers players advanced features designed for both high-spin performance and durability.

Available in two core thicknesses — 10mm and 14mm — each version targets specific playstyles while integrating Selkirk’s latest materials and design technology.

Here’s a breakdown of the paddle’s features and recent updates to the LABS program.

Core thickness options: 10mm and 14mm

The LABS Project 007 comes in two distinct core thickness, which offer advantages suited to different playing styles:

  • 10mm core: The 10mm core is designed for players focused on speed and power. Its thinner profile reduces air resistance, which increases hand speed and shot power. The 10mm thickness allows for faster responses and sharper, more powerful shots.

  • 14mm Core: The 14mm core version is geared toward players who want a balance of control and power. The thicker core offers additional stability across shot types, allowing for consistent playability.

Both core thicknesses are offered in two paddle shapes. The Invikta, which offers a longer paddle shape and handle, provides more leverage and power. The Epic, designed with a standard paddle face and long handle, delivers a blend of power and control.

A zoomed-in image of the LABS Project 007 pickleball paddle shows its gritty paddle surface.

InfiniGrit Surface: Long-lasting spin and durability

The InfiniGrit Surface used on the Project 007 is a new Selkirk feature designed to offer extended durability for spin-based play.

The surface uses a proprietary hardening technology that makes it three times more durable than raw carbon surfaces. This coating helps retain texture longer, which translates into sustained spin performance.

The InfiniGrit Surface allows players to generate up to 2000 RPMs of spin, providing a level of shot control that’s reliable over extended use. Unlike typical spray-on grit, InfiniGrit is specifically engineered to maintain texture and avoid wearing down quickly, making it suitable for players who prioritize spin.

Titanium Mesh Layer System: Enhancing the sweet spot

A patent-pending Titanium Mesh Layer System has been added to both the Selkirk LABS Project 007 10mm and the Selkirk LABS Project 007 14mm versions of the paddle. Placed between the paddle’s face and core, this mesh layer is designed to expand the sweet spot and enhance power:

  • 10mm core: The mesh system maximizes power while keeping the sweet spot intact on the thinner profile, which is typically a trade-off for a smaller sweet spot in thinner paddles.
  • 14mm core: In the thicker 14mm version, the titanium layer adds stability, ensuring the paddle feels consistent across various shot types without compromising control.

Air Dynamic Throat: Improved swing speed and control

The Air Dynamic Throat is a design refinement introduced in the Project 007, originally developed during LABS Project 002. This updated wing design promotes better airflow around the paddle’s throat, reducing drag for faster swing speeds. The design also adds flexibility, allowing players to increase power without sacrificing shot control.

Paddle maintenance for optimal performance

To keep the Project 007 paddle performing well, regular maintenance is recommended. Over time, residue from the court and ball can build up on the surface, potentially affecting spin. Following these steps can help maintain the paddle’s performance:

  • Cleaning frequency: Every few weeks to a month, depending on usage.
  • Method: Clean the surface using a warm, soapy microfiber cloth or an alcohol wipe. This will remove any built-up residue and keep the InfiniGrit Surface in optimal condition.

Routine cleaning helps maintain the paddle’s performance and preserves the surface’s spin capabilities.

Updates to the Selkirk LABS Program: Increased accessibility

With the launch of Selkirk LABS Project 007, Selkirk has also made updates to the LABS program to allow more players to access LABS paddles.

Originally a membership-based program, LABS previously required players to apply for the opportunity to test and purchase LABS paddles. Now, players can purchase LABS paddles directly from Selkirk’s website or from authorized retail partners.

Changes to membership benefits:

  • Early access: Existing LABS members continue to have early access to new releases, allowing them to purchase paddles one week before public availability.
  • Feedback-based membership: Buyers of any LABS paddle can now join the program by providing feedback online. Once a person provides feedback on a LABS paddle, they are officially a LABS member, unlocking access to exclusive apparel, gear, and future early product releases.

This change makes it simpler for more players to experience LABS paddles and provides a way for buyers to contribute feedback that could shape future paddle designs.
