Gender doubles kicked off today in Houston and the Selkirk pros brought the heat as three them will be featured on Championship Sunday. Let’s dive into what went down in each of the draws starting with men’s doubles.
Men’s Doubles Championship: (1) Johns/Johns vs (3) Staksrud/Tellez
The Johns brothers have found their groove after a couple of losses early in the season as they will look to go back-to-back after winning just last week in Cary, North Carolina. They didn’t drop a game with their closest match coming against Jaume Martinez Vich and CJ Klinger in the quarterfinals 11-8, 11-8.
On the bottom half of the draw Federico Staksrud and Pablo Tellez took advantage of an early exit from James Ignatowich and Matt Wright as they will play for gold on Sunday. After sneaking by Connor Garnett and DJ Young 13-11 in the 3rd game in the quarterfinals they put together a more straightforward performance against Tyler Loong and Christian Alshon in the semifinals winning 11-8, 11-5.
Women’s Doubles Championship: (1) Bright/Rohrabacher vs (4) David/Kawamoto
After a somewhat stunning loss early at the North Carolina Cup Anna Bright and Rachel Rohrabacher turned it around in a major way today as they cruised through the top half of the women’s doubles draw. They dropped 23 points across four matches, clinching their spot in the championship match with a statement 11-5, 11-2 win over Lea Jansen and Tina Pisnik.
On the bottom half of the draw Jackie Kawamoto and Vivienne David clinched their spot-on Sunday with an impressive 12-10, 11-4 over the veterans Callie Smith and Lucy Kovalova. Jackie’s aggressive dinks combined with Vivienne’s strong counter attacks forced Smith and Kovalova into some uncharacteristic unforced errors late in game 1 and from there the #4 seeds ran away with the match. It sets up a very interesting women’s doubles final between two teams that have never played before so make sure to tune into this one as it may end up being the match of the day tomorrow.
